My boyfriend is diabetic!?
okay so my boyfriend and i are madly in love. so much to the point where we plan on marrying each other in the future. we've been together for a while now and i know he is diabetic. although he isn't very open about it. and i dont want to ask and make him feel uncomfortable. we talked about it a little but not much. id just like to be filled in on a few things like...
*what is type 1 diabetes?
*if we have kids will they get it?
*can he have the same foods as me?
and any other general information would be so so so helpful.

The most I know from this is from when I was a kid myself. type 1 is general were they have to take a shot normal at least once a day. Depends on how bad they have it and just how active they are. If hey are injured, lets say you get a splinter and it gets a little infected no big deal however , he on the other hand might swell up like a balloon. that could be a little ex stream but another would be. he could stub his toe this can cause some major pain were most rub it ans it goes away is nothing more than a memory. They must be very careful what they do and hope not to get hurt. Yes you can have kids however it might and often does skip a generation. The shows up again down the line. It is best not to eat thing that are sweat and I know that is what he ant the most of(he has you right) only kidding. They make lots of thing for those with diabetes some of taste good and some not so great. He should have a guide that he follows or his mom does. One just has to adjust, adapt and over come. His chances of going into any branch of the serviced would be NEAL. You should ask him about it, get him to talk to you let him know there is nothing to be ashamed of that you want to be a part of his life and he a part of yours.

Type 1 is the most serious and a person is usually born with this type. It's when the body (pancreas) doesn't produce enough insulin and one has to take injections of insulin. He'll have to stay on a strict diet for diabetics and yes it can be inherited or at least the predisposition to get it can be inherited but it's a hit and miss sort of disease genetically.i.e. Some kids might inherit it and others won't. If he takes his injections and keeps a check on his blood sugar he can live a pretty normal life.

Lexie, as much as you don't want to make him uncomfortable by discussing this with him, you need to! If you two are as close as you claim, it shouldn't be a problem. Two people who are "madly in love" (as you put it) should be able to talk about anything, certainly Diabetes, which isn't exactly a taboo subject!
You need to talk with him and find out what HIS special conditions are. While a lot of people may be Diabetic, each person is different based upon how bad their diabetes is. You need to know how much Insulin he takes, when he takes it, what to do if he took too much or not enough, what HIS dietary needs are and how to handle things if he were to ever slip into a Diabetic Coma.
While getting some information here about Diabetes is a great start, you still need to talk to him and find out what his specific needs are.
